Lucid Lynx
Well, I am impressed with my upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS). I really loved Karmic but this distro seems even better. I must admit that I do miss the earth brown tones in Karmic, the purple theme is just not really me. I’ll have to see if there is a way to use the 9.10 [...]

Web Design
I am not a web designer, but I enjoy a little coding now and then. Last year I built Jess’ website (jesshartley.com) using the open source project, Joomla. It came out very nice despite a bit of a learning curve, mostly due to Joomla’s specific nomenclature. Once I got through those concepts, it has turned [...]

Netbook Reload
Today I dumped the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10) on my Lenovo S10 in favor of trying the Moblin 2.1 Beta .
I did the install from a DVD and it went very smoothly. The only thing that doesn’t work out of the box is the Wireless due to the S10’s Broadcom Drivers. You can however find a pretty [...]

Well had the afternoon off as admin leave from work and caught up on some needed tek maintenance at home:
- Upgraded this blog to WP 2.9 – Did the auto-upgrade and it took all of 3 minutes. Way cool!

Friday is Engineering Day
At the County we work a “Flex-Schedule”. This means that we have every-other Friday off. Its great not only because of the long weekend every other week, but also because the Fridays we are here, the HelpDesk traffic drops to almost nothing.
Therefore we have scheduled all day on the work Fridays as “Engineering Day” its [...]

Netbook Continued…
The Lenovo S10 arrived yesterday. Last night I played around for a while with the installed XP (Home Edition). It was snappy and worked very well, but I wanted so much more!
So, I removed the 5400 80G drive and installed a 2 Gig stick of RAM and a 7200 RPM 160G hard drive.
Great ideas for [...]

Article on Slashdot
I responded to a post yesterday on Slashdot. The entry was requesting information on technology recommendations for their school in the UK. You can read my response here.
Would love any comments!

Netbook
I ordered a Lenovo S10 Netbook (Black) directly from the company yesterday. They had the best overall price and I splurged and go the 6 cell battery as well.
I am planning to upgrade the system with a new HD and additional memory as noted HERE.
Total cost to the system is $460.00 including the upgrade. I [...]

Ubuntu 8.10 is Out!
If you haven’t tried “Intrepid Ibex”, you really should!
A completely free, wonderfully put together operating system. It rivals Windows (and Mac) in almost every aspect.
If we were to deploy it at work on the same desktop hardware platform, the comparison would be something along the lines of:
Windows Desktop w/ MS Project and MS Office: $1050
Ubuntu [...]

Open Source Gems
Although my background has been extensively commercial software such as Microsoft Windows (XP, 2000/03, Active Directory) CITRIX, Novell, Lotus etc., for the last two years I have done more and more with Open Source software when building infrastructure.
As the various projects mature, they bring an amazing amount of stable, feature rich services to the [...]
